Composite deck cost calculator for Sparks

Composite costs more to build and nothing to maintain, which makes it a straightforward trade if you know both numbers. The one thing that catches people out is not the board — it is the joist spacing underneath it.

Your estimate

What is behind the number

This is a planning estimate, not a contractor quote. It is built from published 2026 deck cost data, the parts of the residential code that apply to decks, Washoe County’s published design criteria and the City of Sparks fee schedule. It cannot see what your soil does when you dig it, what condition the rim joist behind your siding is in, or whether the footing the drawing wants is where an old line runs. A real price comes from someone standing in the garden with a tape measure and a shovel.
What drives the price

What moves the cost of a composite deck

Composite board is less stiff across a span than wood. Most manufacturers specify joists at 16 inches on centre for a straight lay and 12 inches for a diagonal, because running board at 45 degrees increases the effective span by about 40 per cent. Plenty of older decks in this area were framed at 24 inches, which was fine for the wood that was on them and is not fine for composite.

Grade is the other decision, and it is worth understanding what it buys. Every grade on the list spans the same distance and carries the same load — that is the frame's job, not the board's. What you are paying for is the cap: how completely the board is wrapped, how well the colour holds against ultraviolet, and how long the manufacturer will stand behind it. At 4,500 feet the sun is harder on a surface than the winter is, so cap quality matters more here than at sea level.

The rest is detailing. Hidden fasteners and fascia are what separate a deck that reads as finished from one that reads as covered framing, and both have to be planned into the frame rather than added later.

Joist spacing under the board

16 inches on centre for a straight lay, 12 for a diagonal. A frame at 24 will feel bouncy and on most boards will void the warranty. Closing the spacing is not expensive, but it is not optional and it cannot be done after the boards are down.

Cap grade rather than strength

Entry, mid, premium and PVC differ in cap coverage, colour depth and warranty length. They do not differ in how far they span. At this elevation the ultraviolet exposure makes cap quality a longevity question rather than a cosmetic one.

Pattern, which changes waste and framing

A straight lay wastes least. A diagonal adds waste and needs tighter joists. A picture-frame border needs extra blocking around the perimeter. An inlay needs both. Each step adds cuts as well as material.

What pushes it higher

  • Capped PVC rather than entry-grade composite
  • A diagonal lay, which needs 12 inch joist spacing and wastes more board
  • An existing frame at 24 inches that has to be blocked or sistered
  • A picture-frame border or a contrasting inlay
  • Aluminium, cable or glass railing rather than composite
  • Integrated lighting, skirting and post wraps

What brings it down

  • Entry or mid-grade board rather than premium or PVC
  • A straight lay parallel to the house
  • An existing frame already at 16 inches on centre
  • Composite railing that matches, rather than a contrasting system
  • Keeping the deck under 30 inches so no guard is needed
  • Face-screwed fasteners instead of hidden clips

Questions

What people ask about this

What does a composite deck cost per square foot?

Installed, roughly $30 to $58 per square foot for entry grade, $40 to $75 for mid and premium, and $50 to $85 for capped cellular PVC. Those are 2026 national figures and the Reno–Sparks market sits close to the average. Add hidden fasteners and fascia and expect the upper part of each band, because both are labour as well as material.

What joist spacing does composite decking need?

Most composite requires 16 inches on centre for a straight lay and 12 inches for a diagonal, though it varies between manufacturers so it is worth confirming for the specific board. The reason is stiffness: composite deflects more than wood over the same span, and running board at 45 degrees increases the effective span by roughly 40 per cent. A frame at 24 inches will feel bouncy and usually voids the warranty.

Is composite worth it compared with wood?

The calculator does this arithmetic for you. A comparable pressure-treated deck costs less to build, but cleaning, sanding and re-sealing it every other year at this elevation adds up over twenty-five years — and that is before counting the weekends. Composite is not maintenance free; it needs washing and it can stain. What it does not need is sanding and re-coating, and that is what most people are actually buying.

Does composite get hot in the sun?

Yes, and it is a real consideration on a west-facing deck here in July. Darker boards get hotter than lighter ones, and most capped PVC runs cooler than wood-flour composite because it is lighter in density and usually lighter in colour. If the deck faces west or south and gets used barefoot, colour choice is a comfort decision as much as an appearance one.

What are hidden fasteners and do I need them?

Clips that fit into a groove in the side of the board so no screw heads show in the field. They cost more per square foot and they look considerably better. The practical trade-off is replacing a single damaged board later, which means working from one end of a run rather than backing out two screws. Many builders use hidden fasteners in the field and screws in the final board and around the perimeter for that reason.

Does composite still need a permit and inspection?

Yes. The permit is for the structure, not the surface, and a composite deck is framed and footed exactly like a wood one. That also means the elevation question still applies: Washoe County publishes ground snow load by elevation and requires engineered plans over 70 psf, whatever you walk on.
